Capital Credits
What Are Capital Credits?
Capital credits are one of the biggest benefits of belonging to a cooperative. BEK does not exist to make a profit for outside investors. When the cooperative takes in more than it costs to operate, that extra money is called a margin, and it belongs to the members.
How Capital Credits Work
-
You Use BEK Services
Each year, BEK tracks how much you pay for qualifying services.
-
Margins Are Allocated
At the end of the year, any margins are allocated to members' capital credit accounts based on how much service each member used.
-
Credits Are Retired
When the cooperative's finances allow, the Board of Directors approves the retirement of capital credits and members are paid. Capital credits may be paid years after they are earned, so if you move or drop your BEK service, let us know your new address so we can find you when your credits are retired.

Members 70 and Older
Members and former members who are 70 or older may apply in writing to have their capital credits retired early, on terms set by the Board. Call 1.888.475.2361 and ask for our Capital Credit Specialist.
